How Should I Name Core Photography Images for Datarock?

Follow these naming conventions for core photography to ensure images are correctly uploaded and integrated with Datarock’s platform.

To ensure core photography images are properly uploaded and processed, it’s essential to follow standardized naming conventions. This includes metadata such as Hole ID, Tray Number, From and To depths, and whether the sample was wet or dry. These conventions help ensure accurate data association and smooth ingestion into the Datarock platform.

Required Naming Convention for Core Images

File names should include the following components, separated by underscores (_):

  • Hole ID: Unique identifier for the drill hole.
  • Tray Number(s): Tray number(s) represented in the photograph.
  • From Depth: Depth at the start of the tray(s).
  • To Depth: Depth at the end of the tray(s).
  • Wet or Dry Indicator: Indicate sample moisture (Wet = W, Dry = D).

If the photograph covers a single tray: DDH1_001_5.00_10.65

For two trays in one photo, use a + between tray numbers: DDH1_01+02_5.00_15.00

And if the core is wet, add W at the end: DDH1_01+02_5.00_15.00_W

Handling Multiple Core Trays in a Single Image

When photographing two core trays in one image:

  • Use a + to connect tray numbers (e.g., 01+02).
  • Record the full depth range covered by both trays, from the start of the first tray to the end of the second tray.

Caution: Ensure the depth range spans both trays accurately. Incorrect depths may result in mismatched data and inaccurate downhole profiling.

Including the Wet or Dry Indicator

To specify whether a core tray is wet or dry:

  • Add W for wet or D for dry to the end of the filename.

Recommended Workflow for Metadata Entry

Whenever possible, capture metadata as you take photos. Using a simple application or software to enter these details on the spot can save time and reduce errors. Many modern DSLR cameras can sync with third-party applications, allowing metadata entry directly from the camera to a connected device.

Following these naming conventions will ensure core photographs are properly organized and accessible within the Datarock platform.
